IKEA Kreativ App Launch
Geomagical Labs is IKEA’s research and product lab. In 2020, they were developing an AR tool that would allow users to scan their rooms and design their spaces in 3D with IKEA furniture. Instead of physically moving things around and measuring perfectly, the app would use cutting-edge computer vision technology to visualize your space, so you can interior decorate with ease.
One thing first: getting it launched and in the market.
User Research
First things first was getting to hear from actual people and seeing what they loved and needed improvement. I sifted through hundreds of user test runs, watching them use the app and identifying pain points. Just for fun, I even cut a short video to show to the team how people were feeling (and it was good).
Tutorial Iteration
From there, I was focused on how to best communicate the scanning process, so people understood how to capture their space. The novel technology required iterating on the best ways to explain it.
I organized shoots and tested out different camera set-ups with actors, finding optimal angles that balanced the UI with the real living space they were scanning.
The result? A full, in-app tutorial used during the beta launch.
What came out of this was the framework for their tutorial and video demo pictured here. Geomagical Labs hired Friday’s Films, a former production company I was at, to professionally shoot a library of footage that was repurposed for the in-app tutorial (now in the IKEA app).
